What is LEED?

green2LEED stands for Leader in Energy and Environmental Design and was begun by the U.S. Green Building Council in 1998. In turn, the Green Building Rating System was established by LEED to provide a set of standards for environmentally sustainable construction. LEED was created to define “green building” by establishing a common standard of measurement, promote integrated, whole-building design practices, reconize environmental leadership in the building industry, stimulate green competition, raise consumer awareness of green practices, and transform the building market. Their rating system addresses 6 major areas: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design process. Ratings range from Certified to Silver to Gold, and include the highest level, Platinum.
